My first blog – How I found passion in reading

Hey everyone,I am navybunny25. I love books but it wasn’t like this always. So today I will tell you how I found passion in reading.

When I was 9 years old, I didn’t read much books. It all started when my teacher announced our holiday assignment. My whole class got a list of books. We had to read one of them and then we needed to write a short summary of what happened in the book. The book I chose was The famous five goes to mystery moor. I was not a fast reader back then so it took me some time to finish the book. After that me and my best friend Pari started to write the summary together. The famous five goes to the mystery moor was my first mini novel. After that I started reading Nancy drew and the clue crew. I liked how every time at the end I would be like “who could have thought of that”. That’s when I discovered Geronimo stilton which is still one of my favourite series. I started with buying two books, ‘Cat and mouse in a haunted house’and one more book. I read them, exchanged books with my friends. After that, I found out that I was about to shift to Australia. I was really sad. I hosted a farewell party to all my friends. One of my best friend gave me a Thea Stilton special edition book. I was really happy. I read that book in the last of my days before shifting to Australia. Some days before our flight I exchanged my special edition book for four different books.

When I came to the Australian school everything was really different, the subjects specially. We have a reading subject. When I came I only liked to read Geronimo Stilton  and there were only like 2 or 3 books of Geronimo here so I didn’t know what to read. I was really bored. So I just went to a book tub and took a book out. The  book was ‘my sister the vampire’ I started reading it and it became another one of my favourite series. I l-o-v-e-d it.But then I was without any books again.

Then my teacher asked us to choose a class novel. If you don’t know what a class novel is, it’s a novel our teachers read to us once a week. Our class novel was skulduggery pleasant book . It was a really interesting book I couldn’t wait till the whole class will finish  it so I bought it. I finished it and it was the best book ever.

I have already read all the books in the series and now waiting for the next book to release.

Thank you all of you to read my journey with books I hope you liked reading my blog.

My first day at school in Australia

If you have read my last blog, it was about my transition from India to Australia and how excited I was about my new school. My new school’s name is Carlton Gardens primary school. It is really close to a park and right in front of Melbourne Museum. When I shifted here, the school had not started yet and I took opportunity to visit the park sometimes. My school is very close to my home. When I got admission to Carlton Gardens there was a meet and greet held in December with my teachers and classmates. I was really surprised to see the classroom because I was expecting standard furniture including chairs and tables, instead, I saw five bean bags which they called a ‘noomi’ and all types of chairs. What surprised me even more was the teachers, they were really kind and not very strict. The class was full of noise. I was waiting for the teacher to tell us to stop talking but that took a lot of time. We played games the whole time it was really fun.

My school officially started at the end of Jan. I went to school while riding my scooter. My school had 3 buildings. When I arrived at school, my stomach churned. I was really nervous, excited and hesitant all at the same time . I rushed to my class. My class first got a friendly introduction from our teachers. My teacher’s name was ‘Kelly’ and the second teacher’s name was ‘Rachel’. They told us more about how things are going to be in our class. Next, they asked us to collect stationery from the tables. There was a lot of things on the table but the most interesting things were the highlighters and sticky notes. In my old school, I had never seen anyone using a highlighter or sticky notes. After we collected all the things our teachers told us to label our stationery and books. After the introduction, it was time for reading.

For reading, Kelly told us to organise the fiction library from the author’s last name. It was really hard but we did it. Then it was recess. Recess is a little break where we are supposed to eat snacks. I didn’t have friends so I was feeling a bit lonely so just read my book. I was missing my old friends. Recess was only half an hour long but it felt like hours. Next period was writing and for writing we had to do heart unpacking (a framework for structuring our thoughts in a heart) which I had no clue how to do but eventually, I learned more about it. After school was over we had two choices. To take the flat footpath or go through the park. We took the park path because it had a slant. It was like sliding from a hilltop just while riding a scooter. I would have reached home in four minutes but I had to wait for my parents as both my parents came to pick me up after the school.

After attending my first day of school in Australia which was really interesting, I realized how different it is from the schools in India and may be I would like to talk about that in my next blog. So happy reading !!!

My first few days in Melbourne

My ears were closed from the long flight. We finally arrived in Melbourne, Australia. It was really warm at the airport but that didn’t last long as we sauntered outside the airport and were welcomed by a chilly breeze. We were expecting summers but it seems we were up for a surprise. We had taken a 12 hour direct flight to Melbourne and I was very tired and wanted to reach the hotel soon. We have shifted from India, so had extra luggage which could not fit in a normal taxi. We finally found a van, we kept our luggage and rushed in. It took us ages to get to our destination(40 minutes). I got out of the van first and read the sign ’Quest’ which was our service apartment. It was freezing outside as I rushed inside Quest. We went to our service apartment, I took off my jacket and hurried to my room. It had two beds, one for me and one for my younger brother. Bored, I asked my mum if we could open the box full of toys which we brought along. She said “You can only open it if you clean up afterwards as we are staying here on a temporary basis”.

We stayed in Quest for two weeks. While staying there, we celebrated two festivals, Diwali and Bhai duj. For bhai duj, my brother gifted me a bunny, my first stuffed toy in Australia. The two weeks passed by soon, exploring around and attending a lot of house inspections to find a place to rent. House inspections were really boring, tiring and we had to walk a lot which I wasn’t used to. While we were walking to one inspection I saw an interesting thing across the street, a garage sale. I had never seen a garage sale before so I asked my mum if we could go there. She said we could, as we still had some time left before our next inspection. There were so many interesting things there, but I was attracted by a pair of Razor scooters. I convinced my dad to buy them. Me and my brother enjoyed riding our scooter to the house inspections and nearby places. I love my scooter and ride it to school every day.

Diwali – mini set up for puja

Finding a rental house in Melbourne is really difficult for someone coming to Australia for the first time. Even after so many house inspections, we couldn’t secure a rental house, so we shifted to an Airbnb for 15 days which gave us some more time to find a rental home.

The Airbnb was really a good experience. We were living right next to District docklands which is one of the attractions in Melbourne. In our Airbnb apartment, there was a pool, a jacuzzi and and even a big TV where we could watch Netflix.

At last, we found a place which I could now call home. My parents selected it, so it was a surprise for me and my brother. When I entered my room, I saw a bunk bed and I was so happy.

In my new home – my bunny and my bunk bed

It took us a few days to unpack and settle in our new home. But I still had two months left before my new school was supposed to start, so I utilised my time to explore Melbourne and learn more about it. I was wondering how my new school would be and was excited to meet my teachers and classmates. But for that experience I would probably need to write a separate blog for my school experience and how Australian schools are different from Indian schools. So stay tuned for more!!!!
